Brigadeiro is a popular, easy-to-make, sweet enjoyed at Brazilian parties. It's simple, tasty and uses Brazil's favourite sweet ingredient: sweetened condensed milk. Yum!

Brigadeiro is a Brazilian party food staple. It is made with sweetened condensed milk - Brazilians love the stuff and make a host of other delicious sweets by doing things like dipping grapes and strawberries in the sweet milk - and then coating the fruit with chocolate.

Nestle Quick (another ingredient in Brigadeiro) is another staple. Go figure. If you love all things Brazil, see our Food Trends section for pao de queijo recipe, pasteis and a tasty caipirinha to cool your thirst.

Brigadeiro Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 tin sweetened condensed milk
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Nestle Quick (or other "chocolate milk" powder - not cocoa)
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • Chocolate sprinkles or granulated sugar
  • Tiny paper candy cups

Method:

  1. Combine first three ingredients in a heavy pot and stir constantly over medium heat, bringing to a boil.
  2. Continue stirring about two minutes - or until mixture thickens enough to coat the bottom of the pan.
  3. Remove from heat and carefully scoop hot mixture out of pot into a separate bowl to cool.
  4. Cool completely.
  5. Coat hands with butter and scoop out a tablespoon sized amount into the palm of your hand. Roll into a small ball, roll the ball in sprinkles or sugar and let rest in paper cup.

Makes about 40.

*Sinful secret. Brazilians also like to eat Brigadeiro right out of the pot. Let it cool enough so you don' t get scorched, pass around a few teaspoons and dig in!

I have been looking for a candy like this. A co-worker also brought us her leftovers. There's a Mexican variety of this candy that's shell is a bit crunchier, sugar-coated, and lighter in color. But I don't have a "contact" any longer going on trips to Sierra Leon. This is an excellent alternative!

I just discovered a new and improved way of making it. I use pure natural cocoa and added 4 ounces dark chocolate to make it thicken faster.
Try it and see if you don't like it better than original.
